Before you make a decision, let’s review every detail you need to know about IVF treatment together:

IVF is a popular and successful method of childbearing that uses medical interventions to manipulate both egg and sperm cells for successful fertilization.

What is IVF treatment?

The term IVF was first used in the UK in 1978 with the birth of Louise Joy Brown. But although IVF is a popular term, it can confuse couples seeking medical help for infertility problems.

IVF is a general term for a procedure called in vitro fertilization (IVF). In this treatment, the woman’s egg is processed with the man’s sperm outside the woman’s body. During IVF, the egg and sperm are processed in a petri dish in the laboratory until they develop into embryos. Once this process is complete, the processed embryo is placed in the woman’s body and the pregnancy process begins.

IVF treatment methods

There have been many advances in IVF treatment since 1978, but the basic method of IVF treatment is still reliably used. Below are the steps of the basic method of IVF treatment:

Step 1 – Hormone therapy

Before the procedure begins, the woman is injected with certain hormones such as GnRHa and Gonadotropins. This is done to make the follicles in the woman’s ovary grow. Within three hours after the injection of HCG36, the egg reaches the maturity stage.

Step 2 – Eggs retrieved from the ovary:

The next step is to remove the eggs from the ovary. This can cause some pain, but the patient is given some sedatives to prevent this. The eggs are then removed using a vaginal probe and taken to the laboratory.

Step 3 – Providing a sperm sample:

On the same day of the woman’s egg retrieval, a fresh semen sample is requested from the man for the procedure.

Step 4 – Eggs and sperm combined for fertilization:

The next step is to mix the eggs and sperm in a petri dish and then keep them in an incubator for several days. During this time fertilization is monitored.

Step 5 – Implantation of the embryos:

Once the embryo has formed, the embryo to be used is transferred into the woman’s uterus. Not one embryo is used, but two or three embryos.

When is IVF treatment necessary?

IVF treatment is recommended for couples who have been trying to conceive for more than a year without success.

IVF treatment is usually recommended for infertility due to the following problems:

  • Damaged fallopian tube: The fallopian tube is the pathway an embryo uses to reach the uterus. A blocked, injured or damaged fallopian tube can cause an obstacle in the path to fertilization.
  • Endometriosis: Endometriosis is an overgrowth of tissue outside the walls of the uterus. It can cause dysfunction in the functioning of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries and can prevent a woman from becoming pregnant normally.
  • Problems with ovulation: Infrequent or absent ovulation can interfere with natural pregnancy.
  • Uterine fibroids: Fibroids are benign tumors in the uterus. They are common in women in their 30s and 40s. Fibroids can prevent implantation of a fertilized egg.
  • Impaired sperm production or function: Below-average sperm concentration, poor sperm movement or abnormalities in sperm size and shape can make it difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg. If sperm abnormalities are found, a visit to an infertility specialist may be needed to see if there are underlying health problems.

Up to what age is IVF treatment appropriate?

The upper age limit for successful IVF treatment is considered to be between 42 and 45 years. In general, it is not recommended for women over the age of 43 to undergo IVF with their own eggs. The reason for this is the low success rate of IVF treatments performed over the age of 43.

Is IVF treatment 100% successful?

Success rates for IVF depend on a number of factors, including the cause of infertility, where you have the procedure, whether the eggs are frozen or fresh, whether the eggs are donated or your own, and your age.

The latest report from 2018 shows that 50% of IVF procedures in women aged 35 and under result in a live birth. In IVF treatments in women aged 42 and over, 3.9% of egg transfers resulted in a live birth.

IVF treatment in Turkey

Today, Turkey is growing in popularity as a destination for IVF treatment. There are over 140 IVF clinics in Turkey and one of the main factors that make Turkey attractive for fertility treatment is the low cost of treatments.

Unlike many other countries, Turkish law does not allow egg, sperm or embryo donation for IVF treatment. Therefore, only IVF treatment using one’s own eggs and sperm is allowed in Turkey. While this may seem restrictive, the cost of IVF treatment can be half that of many other countries, and this is one of the main factors that makes Turkey an IVF destination to consider.
